Built in 1977 by RS Engineering (later went on to build the Robin hood kit cars and other exotic replicas).
They decided to create a Ferrari Daytona Spyder replica from the Rover SD1 before progressing to using the Triumph TR7 as the donor. Therefore some replicas had Rover V8s, some used Triumph engines.
This is based on the TR7. I gather in the late-70s a new TR7 was modified to accept the body panels (which were created from measurements taken from a real Ferrari, apparently) to create a very authentic-looking Daytona, and the lights and bumpers are also very convincing. The interior was re-trimmed with some nods towards the Ferrari interior. 15'' knock-off wire wheels were used to give the car good road presence.
So, the story with this car, is that it was bought in about 2004 from the Robin Hood factory where the new management were having a clearout of the older projects and demonstrators. With about 40k miles I think the car had had lots of early use as a demonstrator. It was driven home whereupon it immediately overheated and spent some time having the head gasket replaced! It was then used regularly for about a year, once taking it to the Daytona Replica Club meeting at Chatsworth, joining about a dozen others (and a real one!). It was a pleasure to drive, though a bit heavy without power steering, and needed extra power (the 8-valve TR7 2-litre engine can't really handle the big body to be honest).
So, current (2014) condition...
The bodywork is ok, shines up well. underneath I think there's some corrosion in the rear floorpan, though not too bad. But very much the time to fix, before it gets much worse.
The wheels need shotblasting and re-chroming; tyres probably perished by now.
The interior is very poor - a good clean would help but the seats need re-trimming. A good opportunity to source correct replica interior bits though, and re-trim it properly and authentically in leather.
The hood material is perished though a new hood I'm guessing may be very similar to the TR7?
Mechanically, with the head-gasket fixed the car performed well with no problems. Obviously it's been stood outdoors for some time now so needs recommissioning, but essentially I'd be surprised if it really needs much there.I think it's very much a car you'll have to come to see for yourself to decide on condition and tbh, what it's worth. They don't come up for sale very often, certainly I've never seen a Triumph-based one, so I've advertised it for what I think is fair based on rarity/condition etc.
The registration ROG 150Y (ROG BOY) is included. Being a late-70s car this will qualify for free road tax in about 3 years.
It will need trailoring away and with no battery or fuel, does not run, and the door catch is stuck. A great base for a wonderful restoration
