Regrettable sale of my 1981 Triumph TR7V8 Homologated Group-4 rally car.
This is a properly prepared FIA historic rally, race, hill climb, sprint or road TR7V8 with a current RAC Motor Sports Association competition logbook and homologation papers.
It has won me a number of single venue trophies over the years, but is now in need of some restoration as it has been stood. The basic shell is very solid, with corrosion to the front chassis rails, front valence and headlamp panel. The cod river’s door needs a new skin, but a new galvanised panel is included in the sale.
This Triumph has a mildly tuned 3500cc Rover V8 on twin Sus, although a quad Webber manifold can be included for an extra £100. Be warned however, as you won’t get a double digit fuel consumption with the latter carburettor set up.ÂÂ It has a good standard five speed gearbox and a lovely, multi-linked, (recent) ZF/Quaife axle with rear discs and limited slip differential. Suspension is Bilsteins all around with tarmac-spec coils. There is a hydraulic handbrake and bias pedal box. The fibreglass bonnet and boot look a lot worse than they are and only need good sand down and priming ready for paint. Overall the car is good and as I already said very solid as I am fastidious about rust, but the car has been standing now for some time and will need recommissioning.
There is a full multi-point, triangulated, Roll Centre, roll cage fitted with legs going through to the strut tops and door bars.
The fuel tank is standard, but has been cleaned and rust treated professionally. A new Red Top fuel pump and electrics are fitted. The wiring loom has been professionally repaired following an under dash fire and the dashboard needs refitting. The two Cobra bucket seats are out of date, as are the four point harnesses. A fire suppression system has been fitted, but it’ll need a new extinguisher. There is the usual competition 12v cut-off switches and remote electrical and fire pulls.
The wheels are Minilite replicas in white with good road tyres fitted. There are no spares however.
I’m not sure what more I can add to the description, other than to remind potential buyers, that the big bonus of this car is its’ RAC MSA competition logbook and proven rally history.
The car can be inspected prior to sale, but if you win the auction, then it’s yours and I cannot haggle. I’ve tried to be honest with the advert, I do have 100% feedback and as I said, you’re more than welcome to come over to Shaftesbury in North Dorset, to view before placing a bid. The car is in a well-lit barn and is on my two post ramp, so the underside is easily inspected.
Below is a video of the car running prior to its latest layup period about two years ago. Since the wiring has been repaired, although it’s not running presently due to a lack of time and energy to finish the job!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1m5_VHtIiUg&feature=youtu.be
I welcome serious enquiries (evening and weekends) andI hope the winning bidder enjoys this great Triumph TR7V8 as much as I have in the past, as in the right hands, it could be a top 20 winner at a very minimal cost.
*To be absolutely clear- the shell is sold, with no rust in the floors, boot or inner/outer sills. All four wings are fine, as is the roof and A & B pillars. The inner front and rear wings are fine, but there is corrosion at the front of the chassis legs. The front valence has “seen some action” and the headlamp panel is rusted. The bonnet and boot are fibreglass*
No reserve auction, so grab a bargain while they remain affordable and have some competition fun, or run it as a very fast road or track day car. The DVLA v5 is in my name, so happy bidding.. Andrew

February 2015
Registration: SGR 496R
Chassis Number: ACG2454
Engine Number: 3509005
Number of cylinders: 8
Year of Manufacture: 1976(Race Retro & Classic Car Sale 2013)
Estimate (£): 35,000 - 40,000
Sold for (£): Unsold
From 1976 to 1980 British Leyland ran a Works team of TR7s in International rallying. These cars were initially built with the 16-valve Dolomite Sprint engine but were then later switched to the Rover V8 engine shortly before the introduction of the new TR8 model. The Triumph TR7 V8 was successful in rallying, mainly on tarmac events. The TR7 V8 was most successful in the hands of Tony Pond, the exploits of charismatic Tony Pond driving a "works" entered Triumph TR7 fired the patriotic imagination of the public, winning in Ypres and on the Manx at a time when Triumphs' competition heritage needed reviving.Bought new in 1976 by privateer rally driver, David Lambton, purely to be used as a rally car, this particular TR7 was converted to a V8 rally specification car almost immediately when new, with the preparation and conversion work being carried out by the renowned 'Ian Lines Rallying' of Weston Supermare with help and support from the 'Works'. It has covered just 13,916 documented miles from new.
Finished in Leyland Works colours, the car was campaigned from 1976 - 1982 in the hands of David Lambton in many club and National events including The Durham Dales, Keilder National and Otterburn Rallies. The car was successful and was often mentioned in local press and nationally in the Motoring News, due to its success in many rallies and having won several club championships.
In 1982 the car was laid up and remained unused, but still in the original owners hands, until 2009. A total rebuild of the car was then commissioned and was completed in 2009 to the highest of standards. No expense was spared on the car - it was rebuilt with a fresh dry sump engine by the renowned Rover V8 specialist, John Eales, giving close to 300 bhp with lots of torque. Also a close ratio gearbox was fitted, along with a Quaife limited slip differential. A new full welded cage was also fitted along with almost every rally aid you could think of. The specification today includes factory vented brakes - part no.STN 0068, Works sump guard - part no.STN 0086, quick lift jacking points and Bilstein works suspension - part no.STR 0430.
The car has only competed in the 2009 Bulldog Stages Rally since completion.
Presented today with FIA/HTP papers to full current classic rally spec, and with extensive period history, this is a sensational period rally car guided at half the price it cost to restore, and ready to use.

Registration: KDU 487N
Chassis Number: ACG18
Engine Number: CG14HE
Year of Manufacture: 1975(2011 Silverstone Classic Sale)
Estimate (£): 25,000 - 30,000
Sold for (£): UnsoldBritish Leyland and the exploits of charismatic Tony Pond driving a "works" entered Triumph TR7 fired the patriotic imagination of the public, winning in Ypres and on the Manx at a time when Triumphs' competition heritage needed reviving.
KDU 487N was at the very genesis of that emotive time in the mid seventies as a development car that initially started a works rally car program. Originally used as the development car for the 5-speed gearbox it supported the two works Rally Sprints KDU 497N and 498N as a "recce" car.
The first privateer owner was Ken Wood and with navigator Peter Brown, damaged the car on the Devilla stage of the Bank of Scotland rally necessitating a new shell. Triumphs Competition department provided a new "works" specification TR8 shell developed with Safety Devices, complete with "let in" roll cage to the A posts and roof, strengthened, and with lightened panels. Stamped SD 71 ID which is visible today on the front panel.
Class wins followed on the Burmah and Trossachs rallies, 4th on The Bowmaker and 8th on the Galloway.
In 1979 the Kingdom Stages was won outright, 4th on the Bank of Scotland and Burmah and another Trossachs class win.
In addition to the integrated roll-cage the works shells included heavy duty brackets for the axle and Panhard rod tower and quick-lift jacking points.
Now completely rebuilt and prepared by the renowned rally expert Ricky Higgs and currently with a reputed Don More Sprint engine as supplied to the works in 1975, (Fully prepared V8 available). The gearbox is as run by the works, a LT77 five-speed close ratio mated to 4HA rear axle and LSD. The fuel system, purpose manufactured Premier Fuel Cell has a FIA certificate. Brakes are AP 4-Pot caliper fronts, 2-pot rears with a hydraulic handbrake. A biased pedal box, fresh Bilsteins dampers ,high ratio rack, new seats and belts completes the inventory on a seriously well engineered rally car with an important history.

This TR7 had a standard V8 fitted when bought then after little use the wiring loom melted and circumstances meant it wasn't used again.
My sons car which we are now selling as just are not getting round to fixing it. it has no mot or tax as has been off the road for 5 years. Being sold as a non runner.
Body
This was the most solid car i could find when it was bought. It was MSA logbooked with homologation papers and had just been finished after its conversion from a tr7 road car to tr8 rally car. It has a roll cage fitted. The 7th picture shows a small hole in the floor pan about 6 inches long. Plus the panhard rod has pulled off the chassis.
The car is basically still solid but needs a little welding as described plus a repaint.
I have rubbed both floor pans down underneath and applied 2 coats of hammerite over the last 2 winters.
As you can see i have a new front spoiler included.Power Train
The engine is a standard v8 on SU carbs. I have a weber set up with 4x40 webers on a mangoletsi manifold which have never been fitted.
It has a SD1 5 speed gearbox
The rear axle is the later heavy duty version with an LSD which worked very well. I don't know the ratio but i believe the LSD was new.Suspension
The suspension is running escort front 2 and a quarter inch Bilstein roller top mount struts with bilstein rear shocks. The car has been polybushed.Brakes
It has princess 4 pots on the front with vented discs plus a caliper conversion on the rear with solid discs.
It also has a hydraulic handbrake. This is not an ex works car but had been built by a gentleman who prepared vehicles from his home.
It worked well but i had plans to build a mega engine hence i bought the weber carb conversion for it but the wiring issue happened and i never got round to it.We are selling now while the car is still good enough for someone to put it back to its former glory or even better.

Ex Works Triumph TR7 V8 Rallycar
An original Ex Works TR7 V8 rally car , has just under gone a 2 year sympathetic bare shell restoration (photo file available) . Rebuilding the original components where ever possible , retaining the original bodyshell , engine , gear box axle , brakes , Dash board and wiring loom etc.
This car originally built for 1978 Lombard RAC rally , was then famously sold via Del Lines to Charles Golding in 1979 who successfully rallied it for a further 25 years.
Due its lack of owners it has stayed extremely original , the body shell still has the welded intregal roll cage in the front screen pillars , the dash board is totally authentic with its felt top , screen , Halda twinmaster , pea lights , original Magnesium minilite wheels (8" front & 9" rears) and many more small details that only a car of this heritage would have .
The car has been finished in the "SPARKRITE" colours from when it formed a 2 car team along with Roger Clark for the 1980 Lombard RAC rally. The car carried Charles' own private plate for the last 3 decades MUC1D.
Mechanically - it is a full spec. Group 4 TR7 V8 rally car, fully rebuilt engine , quad 48 Webers , dry sumped Close ratio gear box , 4HA axle , AP brakes and rear , bias pedal box and hyd hand brake , Bilstein suspension alround , Heavy duty X member, cranked billet steering arms etc.
Included in the sale are the original Homologation papers , magazine articles , old MOTS , photos , V5C , MSA log book etc. Would be great to see this car out competing on Historic rallies again.
The car is available with a large spares package.
